I kinda figured that...

You Would Make a Horrible 1930's Wife

You are way too non conformist, independent, and sassy to be an ideal retro wife.

You may be so wild that you aren't even considering marriage!

Good thing we don't live in the 1930s anymore!

My totally girlie day

It was a super girlie day for me yesterday!

First I stopped in and got my hair cut. I can't tell you how much it needed it. I finally got all the really horrible dry dyed part off. Of course, I automatically thought of dying it again in an effort to hide my grey hairs, which I don't have a lot of, but I don't particularly like anyhow. We will see what I end up doing, but right now it is totally natural.

Then I went to one of my favorite shopping places -- Marshalls. I bought another pair of Rocket Dog shoes, brown tartan this time. A boho skirt (darkish blue with silver flowers), two pairs of shorts, another tankini and I was too lazy to try any of it on, so we will see what I end up taking back because it didn't fit or looked horrible on. Oh, also a big floppy packable hat. All for my trip next month. I can't be expected to wear the same outfits that I do here at home. :-)

After that I stopped at a craft store and bought some yummy dichroic glass pendants. I used to make my own glass pendants and beads, but it is much cheaper and easier to buy them now. Not quite as fun though. I really like melting glass, but I never seem to find the time to do it.

Lastly I stopped and picked up Chinese food for dinner -- no cookin' completes the perfect girlie day.

Men get old too

Swimsuits

I hate them. I always have, but even more so now that I am older.

I spent yesterday over at some friends house in their pool. I don't mind swimsuits there, I am among friends. However, next month I will be in California, on a public beach. Ick. Hopefully I will at least have some bit of a tan by then. Back when I was young and stick thin I always wore bikinis, though the more conservative ones as I have never been totally comfortable with lots of flesh showing. Now that has changed to tankinis. Even a bit more than that because I wear the little skirt to hide my fat thighs a bit more.

Our friends have given us an open invite to come swimming every single day if we want. Even if we go a few times a week that will be more exercise than I normally get and maybe I can shape up a bit?

I am always going to do something -- like tai chi or yoga classes a few times a week and never do. Maybe hanging out with friends is the motivation I need to actually get to moving my fat ass out from in front of the computer and/or tv.

Thrift Store Boho Skirt Find!

I found this great skirt for less than $5.00 at a local thrift store! I love it! I know, I have too many of these, but who could resist?

Vintage Housewife Images

I love vintage advertising, especially ones that have to do with women, housework, families. It's an interesting and fun look into an unreal past. I grew up in the 1950s and '60s; our home sure wasn't like that! We didn't have a flying car, or self cleaning anythings...we did have a turquoise refrigerator though; now that was very fifties. Here are a few images just for fun. Enjoy!

Okay, so this has been my problem. I haven't been dressing correctly for the occasion!

A busy housewife is a happy housewife!

Okay, maybe I should be reading this. . .

I'm happy for her, really.

I'm with you, sister! But Bon Ami isn't our friend; I found out you still have to do the cleaning!

Sorry Penny, you're a little too perky for me!

This housewife looks like she's just barely hanging in there! Any minute now, she's going to flip.

A bit of girlie bitching

I spent yesterday actually cleaning my house. Once I get into it I actually get rather obsessed, but I don't get into very often. :-)

Let me give the women and men out there a bit of advice that I sadly never had. If you have a big fluffy dog or dogs don't ever allow someone to talk you into carpeting a staircase. It is the biggest pain in the ass in the world to try to clean. I spend more time on that f$cki8g staircase than I do the entire upstairs. It never comes completely clean either. You can't use the actual rotating brush part of the vacuum so you are stuck with the hose and whatever crappy attachment. I have tried everything - sticky paper, different vacuums and attachments, static brushes and they are all a complete time consuming pain in the ass.

New Season Project Runway!

I don't like "reality shows" at all. I dislike the competition, the hostility, the mind games; it's all so nasty and immature. No one is judged on ability or talent; just how nasty they can be. Oh, they'll throw in things, like on Survivor -- if you fall off a log, you lose -- but they don't leave it at that. (In fact, don't get me started on Survivor; with all it's gratuitous exploitation of bug eating and "hunting" and the local landscape, etc.)

That's why I like Project Runway. It's about the talent, creativity, endurance of the designer. There's plenty of snippy behavior; who wouldn't snap and swipe and snipe when you've been up all night trying to sew from scratch a fabulous evening gown out of candy wrappers and ferns or something? And as we well know dahlings, us creative types are so temperamental! Aside from that kind of thing, which doesn't last long, the show is concerned with fashion and talent, not who aligns themselves with whom and all that ridiculous stuff.

I'm creative and love clothes, but can't sew, don't want to sew, in fact, hate sewing. I just don't have the patience at all! I can think of designs; but then I'd have to go and make the thing. One of my sisters is fantastic at sewing; she makes most all her clothes, and her kids too, and you cannot tell at all it's "homemade." She belongs on Project Runway!

Anyway, I'm excited the new season begins tonight, on the BRAVO channel. 9pm Eastern, 8pm Central.

I Never Leave The House Without . . .

I can look and feel like crap, be wearing some frumpy old thing (rare, but it happens dahlings) but I never leave the house without:

1. Earrings
2. Face lotion; usually sunscreen, face moisturizer with sunscreen, etc.
3. A bracelet of some kind, even if it's a single thin bangle
4. Lip gloss

The Bo Ho-Retro Hippie-Faux Gypsy Look

I love it. I'm glad it's been fashionable the past few years, although really, I've never stopped dressing like that, not completely. I'm just an old Bohemian flower child.

I have so many skirts like the one pictured here (I love that one, even though I have many close to it) and glittery blouses and tons of bracelets, from bangles to beaded to chunky.

I don't care if the look ceases to be in fashion, I like it, I look good in it (there's a fine line between looking frumpy in a long skirt, and looking happy and fresh) and so I'm sticking with it!

Summer Shoes

During the hot days I wear sandals. Mostly Betula, by Birkenstock. Yes, Birkenstocks are ugly, but they are also the most comfortable shoes on earth. The Betulas are cuter than the regular Birkies, normally having rhinestones and other decorative touches. Below is a pair I actually own, only mine are orange. I also have "going out" sandals which are not as comfortable, but a lot prettier.

Like Regan Lee I can't stand what I deem as athletic shoes. Those would be Nike or something like that. They are always too hot for me, then my feet swell making them feel a size too small. I don't find them comfortable at all.

However, to me athletic shoes don't include what I call skate shoes or sneakers. Canvas shoes in other words. I used to really love Vans, but this summer I have been wearing Rocket Dog in the cool evenings or out for a walk.

I like canvas shoes because they always come in a variety of colors and patterns. They aren't so heavy and hot either. I wear them most of the spring, fall and the warmer days in the winter. This summer my favorites are my black with silver metallic skulls and red tartan slip-on Rocket Dog shoes.

Girlie stuff that would be hard to live without

If I left on a spur of the moment vacation tomorrow, what are the girlie things I wouldn’t want to forget?

1. Dior Show Mascara in black
2. Smashbox eyeshadow in golden orchid
3. black kohl eyeliner almost any brand will do
4. Catwalk brand hair mousse
5. Lip balm -- preferably good old fashion Blistex in the tube
6. A travel sized jewelry box full of jewelry
7. Lots of body lotion -- I like lots of different kinds, but kind of prefer Burt Bees milk and honey lotion if I could only take one. I can put it on before sleep and the smell is nice for falling asleep.
8. H2O nightly oasis rejuvenating face cream

Probably lots more stuff I would like to remember, but those are the basics that I would really hate to forget.
