I spent yesterday actually cleaning my house. Once I get into it I actually get rather obsessed, but I don't get into very often. :-)
Let me give the women and men out there a bit of advice that I sadly never had. If you have a big fluffy dog or dogs don't ever allow someone to talk you into carpeting a staircase. It is the biggest pain in the ass in the world to try to clean. I spend more time on that f$cki8g staircase than I do the entire upstairs. It never comes completely clean either. You can't use the actual rotating brush part of the vacuum so you are stuck with the hose and whatever crappy attachment. I have tried everything - sticky paper, different vacuums and attachments, static brushes and they are all a complete time consuming pain in the ass.

I'm no good at it; I don't get it. I can clean for hours, and someone comes along, says "I thought you said you were cleaning house?" --after all that, no one can tell! It takes me forever to do the dishes; I dunno why, just does.
And with five cats, I can agree with you that carpeting is a huge mistake.
